Custom for Capricorn

Inspired by Pete Hamill's novel, Forever, my friend gives a gift to his mother each year on his birthday. This year marked his third decade, and he wanted to pay tribute with a custom piece. We discussed using inspiration from the Capricorn constellation to personalize a brooch. He emailed me a sketch depicting three interpretations of the zodiac sign

He indicated a preference for the image on the top right. His mother was a Lady Peacock Varsity D1 basketball player, and this design suggested both a peacock & the zodiac sign.

I drafted two sketches with structural dimensions and stone sizes, and he selected #1.

Since he's not a fan of red garnet (January's birthstone), we chose round Aquamarine and princess cut Diamonds to radiate from a blue Star Sapphire cabochon.

The novel Forever poses the existential question of what makes life worth living ~ where would we be if not for our mothers?
